GEORGE GROVES V CHRIS EUBANK JR- 10pm Saturday night
Over the past few years, the sport of Boxing has lost its way. After many dodgy results and sideshows (McGregor V Mayweather) threatening the integrity of the sport, fans finally have a contest that has brought about a sense of respect for the old art again. The success of the World Boxing Super Series has surprised some but when you look at the talent in the super-middleweight division, it was always going to deliver.
Tonight sees a contest between two fantastic fighters with several rewards on the line. The winner will progress to the final where riches await and this fight also sees Groves defend his WBA title belt as well. Personally, I think Callum Smith who fights in the other semi-final is the best boxer in this contest, but that does not devalue this bout in any way.
Looking at the two fighters, they are evenly matched. Groves is only a year older than Eubank and is the bigger man. Groves has spent 10 years as a Pro compared to Eubank's 7 and arguably has fought a lot higher quality opposition (Carl Froch being one to name). Both possess awesome power and have the ability to absorb punishment. Eubank is widely accepted as the faster boxer and this speed could be telling in the later stages of the fight. Groves guile and power could be telling in the earlier rounds.
The fight could go either way, but I am favouring George Groves to break the Eubank hype and take this contest. I can see both fighters possibly being knocked down and I also think this one could go the distance. I feel that Groves will win on points through his work in the early rounds but Eubank will win the later rounds of the fight. maybe a split decision at the end???
Tips:
George Groves 6/4
Groves to win by split decision 25/1
Groves by majority decision 40/1
Eubank Jr to be knocked down and Groves to win on points 15/2
Both fighters to be knocked down and over 8.5 rounds 10/1
Both fighters to be knocked down and Groves to win 16/1
Both fighters to be knocked down & Groves to win by Split Decision 80/1
keeping stakes very low as such an open contest. let's hope the headlines in the morning report on one of the best British Boxing Fights for decades rather than a fight that ends in controversy.
Good luck all if you follow and I would be interested to hear other people's thoughts!!
