Evening guys, just out of curiousity, how many of you folks keep a notebook? What sorts of things do you jot down? Horse name obviously, weight, jockey, course and distance?
For those who dont know, there are sites where you can watch replays of the races - sporting life dot com, you just need a sky bet, i t v 7 or a sporting life account to log in.
I think im going to start one and just keep an eye out on some. I would welcome peoples views on both the notebook and the horses below.
The first horse for me would be in today's 16:55 at Windsor, Jazzi'o. 6f 12yd Good to firm
First time out and ran green at the back, but caught up in the final stages of the race and finished 3rd...looked like once it settled down it had a bit more to give, but was too late.

Roger V’s stable tour By Charlie Sutton
DEFOE: It will probably surprise nobody that he’s by some way the most popular of our horses at the annual Henry Cecil Open Day. Did us proud last year in the Coronation Cup & then following up in the Hardwicke, although his achievements did mean his rating edged a bit too high for a muted Melbourne Cup raid. He was due to run in the Sheema Classic at Meydan in March before the cancellation, and he just took a couple of strides longer than expected to pick up when he was beaten in his prep run in the City Of Gold. They didn’t go very quick there and the winner Loxley has demonstrated he is a talented one with 10f speed, with the race playing more to his strengths than Defoe’s.
ZABEEL PRINCE: A G1 winner as a 6yo, and the G3 he won was arguably an even stronger race. He has a turn of foot over the specialist 9f trip, something he wasn’t able to display in a very testing Prince Of Wales’ up in trip. He ran better than the distance he was beaten in the Eclipse but not so much at Goodwood over the easy mile. 9f clearly does suit him very well.
ROSEMAN: Lightly-raced and very talented. I’m not going to say he would’ve won at Royal Ascot with a better trip, but he certainly would’ve finished closer. Wide-margin Listed win back at a mile did make me wonder where he’d have finished in the QEII on similar ground!
SAN DONATO: Very smart but has had his issues. He’s already been G1-placed in the French Guineas which was a positive as far as his chances of properly getting the mile. Hopefully he can improve on that and become a G1 winner.
CAPE BYRON: A convincing winner of the Wokingham, he clearly loves it at Ascot having also won the Victoria Cup & Bengough Stakes there last season. With that in mind his big target is the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, and if he’s ever going to win a G1 that will likely be his best chance. Of course, he’s got a few lbs to find in order to do so.
UAE JEWEL: We hope he is a top-class horse in the making over 10f. Looked good in the Wood Ditton & on his step up into Listed company last season, then just unfortunately had an issue pre-French Derby that kept him out until late September. Trying to avoid throwing out clichés, but he does have a lot of pace which will be a major asset if he can confirm he fully stays 10f in top company.
TURJOMAAN: Disappointing professionally and financially that he didn’t win the Thoroughbred Stakes at Glorious Goodwood! He’s still lightly raced, however, and that Thoroughbred Stakes is sound form.
Older Horses round up
Goes to show the embarrassment of riches at Carlburg at the minute for some of the following horses to be considered for a “the rest” section, but they are yet to make their breakthrough at Group level.
PRINCE EIJI came closest with a nice run in the Darley Stakes in October & he’s capable of better still being so lightly-raced.
WILLIE JOHN has undoubtedly disappointed but ran to a good level when chasing home Elarqam at Goodwood. Top handicaps are now an option.
FUJAIRA PRINCE hasn’t seen the racecourse often but has plenty of ability when he has.
MUTAMAASIK is an obvious Hunt Cup-type runner having improved with every start to a mark of 100.
FIFTH POSITION missed out on having a run in the Lincoln, for which he had been favourite. His novice win was pretty good.
RIVIERA NIGHTS has arrived from Richard Hannon and is the type for 7f/8f handicaps.
Every yard has a horse they cannot believe hasn’t won for them and SALAYEL is ours. Hopefully she can put that right in 2020.
AUSTRALIS isn’t flashy but I’m really looking forward to working out a plan for him. He’s going to stay very well & showed enough tactical pace at Chelmsford under a very smart ride from David Egan to think he can keep progressing.
3yo’s
Classic Hopes/Group horses…
DAAHYEH: A lovely filly, there’s the concern her form may flatten out as it can with forward 2yos, but hopefully that isn’t the case. She won’t get any further than 8f I don’t think.
STYLISTIQUE: Nearly collared Daahyeh late in the Rockfel having been a little outpaced throughout, shaping like a mile would be well within her this season. Her final run was one too many with the benefit of hindsight and, although it may sound overly positive, she wouldn’t let herself down in a Guineas.
QUEEN DAENERYS: A smart filly with a nice pedigree, she beat a well-regarded filly at Newmarket although she was receiving a nice bit of weight there. We let her loose in the Fillies’ Mile but she just wasn’t quick enough to land a blow, and was just lacking a bit of experience still.
MOLATHAM: Debuted in a very warm race, won the Convivial & then was very impressive in his Listed race at Doncaster. The Autumn Stakes was too much of a test of stamina for him at that point in his career, particularly on the ground. In the past I’ve often made the mistake of dismissing juveniles who finish 4th or 5th in those kinds of races as simply being hard to place as 3yos, and I think it would be unwise to make that same mistake here.
PIERRE LAPIN: Hugely talented and won the Mill Reef despite still being raw physically and mentally. He’s come on well in both categories, and I notice that he’s now favourite to out-do his half-brother and win the Commonwealth Cup.
SUNDAY SOVEREIGN: Came to us after his slightly disappointing run in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot and we were unable to get another run into him as a 2yo. Clearly any horse that goes off 13/8f for a Royal Ascot race has to have plenty of ability, and this guy is all speed. Hopefully his niggles are behind him.
Novice winners…
We have a number of very lightly-raced novices who have the potential to go a long way and haven’t yet displayed anything like their full ability.
MONTATHER is smart, and as a debut SP of 8/11 suggests he does show it. Hopefully he’s pattern class.
KHALOOSY won his novice a couple of days before Montather, and won it so well that I’m surprised that Jack Mitchell was paid a riding fee. The 2nd has won since, but the race did fall apart somewhat.
PREMIER POWER won his novice in similar style to Khaloosy but over 6f, and that allows for a bit of winter dreaming.
MOTTRIB was disappointing at Leicester on paper, but the race has worked out well and his saddle also slipped. There’s good ability there.
DELTA’S ROYALTY comes with a big reputation with her pedigree, and she won despite being clueless at Kempton, causing several heart palpitations in doing so. She’s a huge filly and more experience will do her the power of good.
JAARIYAH is a nice horse who won on debut and showed a change of gear. She’s potentially a trial filly and she’ll get a mile.
FOORAAT is my favourite as I’m a big fan of her brother Benbatl. She’s not flashy at home and had a good bit of strengthening up to do over the winter, so for her to win on debut at Newcastle was a very good pointer to the fact she’s well above-average. Like Benbatl she should have no issue with 10f and I’m likely to end up with a picture of her on my wall at some point.
CABALETTA has a very strong-staying pedigree and as such it was very promising that she was able to win on her only start as a 2yo, albeit over a mile in testing conditions. She travelled nicely there & I wouldn’t want to pigeonhole her as a one-dimensional staying prospect, but she is likely to be best on soft ground and however far she ends up staying it won’t be a surprise.
RAAHEQ is a small filly with a ton of ability, as she showed on her only start at Bath.
MAGNETISED did well to get up late on his only start in testing conditions at Doncaster. He has an exceptional pedigree & hopefully is a nice horse in the making.
GOLD WAND was sent off 13/8f on her debut and was run down by Domino Darling. She is immensely talented & don’t be hasty to rule out her reversing that form, which could be in a Group 1!
Handicappers
This is the bit I always turn to when reading this type of thing, but as always there’s only so much given away & plenty of reading between the lines to be done!
ASCENSION is one of those horses who my bank manager dislikes. I thought he’d win his nursery off 87 but he was going nowhere in the dip and eventually finished a lot closer than looked possible. There was a 7f handicap at Newbury I had my eye on but we’ll have to see what the re-shaped calendar looks like. He does want give in the ground.
SHANDOZ is a nice type who will be a better 3yo over a trip. He wasn’t ideally suited by Wolves on his final start.
WALEYDD was pencilled in to run at Doncaster in the usually warm 10f handicap on the Sunday. He idled in front on his final novice start which may have made it look like he didn’t stay.
ESTABLISH frustratingly ended up on 85 without winning, although the Shadwell horse who beat him second time seems to be highly regarded. He was just a bit immature at Kempton, generally messing about rather than any particular issue.
WALIYAK has an opening mark of 84 having won her final start. She’ll hopefully be a lovely 10f filly.
UNION was flat on his 3rd run, but he would hopefully improve for a step up in trip this season.
NAIZAGAI got a good mention from Ben in his five-to-follow handicappers list and I’d agree with his sentiments. I look forward to him running.
ZEGALO looks a strong stayer and will need a bit of give in the ground at least. He put his experience to good use at Nottingham on his third start and is a proper galloper.
SWOOPING EAGLE only has a mark of 70 but he’s bred to do better this season over a trip. He’s one of the first Varian Syndicate horses, and shares are available in this year’s 2yo intake!
(anyone interested in delving into syndicate ownership at the Varian yard can find info on available horses HERE)
Maidens
On paper there are several winners-in-waiting, the nicest of which would probably be Alash Orda, Angel Power and the aforementioned Gold Wand.

One I tracked & having my first look 2020 she is givin a real / decent Chance tomorrow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dark Horse: WALIYAK Sights lowered 210 Lingfield class 3 @2/1 first show. Good luck☘️ 🤞
WALIYAK. Roger Varian's filly could only manage fourth at York's Ebor meeting but her previous two seconds were good, particularly her performance in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot
Last years result . 2019: (5 ran) Nearooz ( 5 ) , Age 3 , Wgt 9-7 , SP 9/4 - David Egan / R Varian
stats @lingfield 3yearolds 2-7 29%
Waliyak (betsafe) We like this filly and feel she has a future. She did nothing wrong last season, winning her final run. We might try to sneak her into the Sandringham at Ascot over a mile, although I think she's a middle-distance filly.
Won 4.5L 👌 11/10 - 2/1 needed that ,

Gordon Elliott’s Dark Horses
Don Diablo
He's worth watching out for over the next few weeks as he's a nice horse who is capable of a fair bit better than he showed on his only run last season when he was beaten by a smart horse of Noel's (Powerful Ted) in a bumper at Galway in October. He just missed a bit of time at the wrong part of the season but he is back in good shape and going well. I'd expect him to take plenty of beating in a bumper before he goes hurdling when he should make a nice novice.
Farouk D'alene
He's hardly a dark horse having won both his start in bumpers for us but he mightn't be quite as high profile as some of our other horses. Since he first came to us I've loved him and I really like the way he goes about things. He was always going to be at his best when he was sent jumping so it was nice to see him win two bumpers and I really liked his second win at Naas where he beat a very good horse of Joseph O'Brien's. He's going to be a nice type for some good staying novice hurdles.
Grand Roi
He cost a lot of money out of the Million In Mind dispersal at Doncaster during the summer but he came with a big reputation and you couldn't fault him on what he has done on the track so far. To date he has campaigned at a relatively low key level but he has won three of his four starts and shown enough to suggest he might contend for some big races.
At home he seems a very relaxed and laid back type so while two miles is fine for him I don't think he will have any trouble staying a bit further. As he is a four-year-old it would make sense to try and keep him to his own age group initially so the Grade 3 Fishery Lane Hurdle at Naas in November and the Grade 2 at Limerick over Christmas would look like two good races to aim towards. He isn't with us all that long but I'd like what he has been able to show us.
Run Wild Fred
Last season was a bit more low key for him than for some of our other novice hurdles but when he last ran he produced a really nice effort to defeat a good horse of Willie's (Lord Royal) in a Grade 3 at Punchestown in mid-February. It would have been very interesting to see what would have happened had he not fallen two out in a decent novice hurdle at Thurles in January which was won by Monkfish. That horse would have been extremely hard to beat on the day but I think our horse would have finished a very good second.
He is a really tough sort and a thorough stayer who he should make a quality staying chaser and he'd look to me like a horse for the likes of either the RSA or the National Hunt Chase. I'd also expect him to progress very well with racing this season.
The Bosses Oscar
I would imagine he caught a lot of people's eye when he was an unlucky fifth in last season's Martin Pipe at Cheltenham. Given how the race unfolded for him I think he did very well to finish fifth. He has point-to-point experience but he is a very young horse still so I think we might keep him to hurdling this season and there is a nice prize to be won with him over two-and-a-half miles or further. We have a few good handicaps over those trips in Ireland and I'd be hoping he could win one of those and we'll be looking to get back to Cheltenham for something like the Coral Cup.

Fyi i dont know if any of you guys use sportinglife's stable? I use it via skybet account and you can follow certain horses/stables/jockeys. It will send you an email the evening before of all entries of interest.
Handy as it saves you trawling through all the cards but at the same time stops you from looking through all the cards and identifying any potentials that you dont actually followm

Few to watch out for from John Joe O’Neill SHANTOU'S MELODY 4th / He's the first foal of dual Grade 1 and Cheltenham Festival winning mare Glens Melody. We took him to Fontwell and expected him to go well and he just got edged about by a Flat-bred of Milton Harris's. The pair of them quickly pulled clear of the third horse there so I hope the form is okay. The plan is to give him further experience in a bumper before going over hurdles - Bangor on October 27 in the plan all being well. . 02 Nov 20 16:25 Hereford THEME TUNE He's from a really good National Hunt family containing the likes of Supreme Prince and Supreme Serenade. He shaped nicely in his bumper at Warwick when finishing sixth. We'll be going novice hurdling with him but I want to get another start into him in a bumper first. The plan is to run in a maiden bumper at Uttoxeter on October 30. He's one of two Trevor Hemmings has kept in training with me, the other being Cloth Cap, and I hope his patience is rewarded. 31 Oct 20 15:40 Ascot DJANGO DJANGO He's a grand horse with plenty of ability. He won the stayers' final at Haydock on quickish ground. But I think he really wants more ease which is why I took him out at Chepstow the other week. His best run last term was at Newbury when winning well off a mark of 130 and I think he's at his best on a big, galloping track. With that in mind I'm going to aim at Exeter and if I'm not happy with the ground for him then I'll look at Wincanton on October 25 for a 0-140 handicap. I'm hoping he develops into a decent staying chaser for Martin Broughton and the others who own him. November 3 or Newbury on November 5 SOARING GLORY Click here for full profile, FREE video form and to add to My Stable He's a horse we've always liked. He won his first two starts in bumpers at Warwick and Ascot before finishing second in a Listed race at Ascot in deep ground. He made a winning debut over hurdles at Chepstow's first meeting and did it nicely. The front two were really trapping over the last few hurdles and he'll have learnt plenty from that run. I'm now looking at two races for his next possible start, Exeter on November 3 or Newbury on November 5. Both races are over two miles as he has plenty of speed. Few replay clips to watch if interested www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/jonjo-oneill-my-five-to-follow/185514

Take My Hand
Take My Hand - 3rd in 3.50 Clonmel 02/03/23
Take My Hand was on my radar for Michael Mulvany and I was surprised she finished where she did considering she drifted out to 25/1. Jordan Gainford has been onboard her for her four starts of hurdles and he wasn't hard on her from two out in this race. I actually think he thought she was going to fade out of it more than she did and she ended up going up 1 lb in the handicap as a result. She can win a race off 94 and should take a step forward from her handicap debut. Keep an eye on the market with this one as she will be punted when fancied.
Red Trail
Red Trail - 5th in 2.00 Navan 04/03/23
I thought jockey Sean O’ Keeffe gave Red Trail trained by Andrew McNamara a lovely educational ride here on the inside, covered up and learning to settle he jumped well. He finished a 4 lengths fifth behind the Dermot Weld trained Grappa Nonino. He was sent off at odds of 50/1 that would indicate he ran better than expected. He was a two time winner on the flat over 1m 2fs and might be targeting a handicap down the line. It will be interesting to see what mark the handicapper gives him. He showed enough to suggest that there is a race in him and all the horses at the top of the market finished around him.
Vera Verto
Vera Verto - 4th in 3.45 Leopardstown 05/03/23
Vera Verto was 3rd in a Maiden Hurdle 3 ¼ lengths behind the now 142 rated Icare Allen. That was just over a year ago. She then finished fifth in a Maiden at Punchestown behind the likes of The Tide Turns (OR 130), HMS Seahorse (OR139), Igraine (OR118) and Brazil (OR142). She won her Maiden Hurdle at Navan this time last year and looks like a spring horse. She finished 9 ½ lengths fourth last time at Leopardstown behind Gaoth Chuil but showed enough to suggest she is capable of winning one of these races soon off her current mark of 114. The over exaggerated back hand she got from jockey Patrick O’ Brien looked to me like he was trying to let on he was giving her a harder race than he actually was. The fact that he did it before running up the back of horses would also suggest he didn't give her the option to pick up from it. When he pulled her out in the clear after that he rode her like her chances had gone. HD Eye Catchers

Bumper Hexham 4.45 2mile 48y Heavy
Interesting debutant “Charlie’s Numbers” Frankel - September Star - Sea The Stars Frankel 175,000 stud fee cost .
Andrew Rosen & Eddie Easton Bought the Dam September Star for 260,000 as a yearling Both men are Owners & Breeders of this impressive National Hunt debutant Charlie’s Numbers who is trained by George Scott ..
What Baffles me is how they claim to have bought the Gelding as a yearling for 130,000 when they already owned the Dam and bred him & obviously paid £175,000 Stud fee equalling a loss of £45k to the yearling purchase ..I just find the whole system strange anyone any ideas??
After spending over 400k on the dam & the stud fee’s I’d be hopeful to line up in last years 2000 Guineas or the Derby rather than a Hexham bumper worth £2,614 to the winner as a gelded 4 year old .. Hopeful of a Cheltenham Horse or Dual purpose whatever it’s madness
2nd favourite from the Nicky Richards stable runs a purchase from the Irish PTP scene who’s 2nd (Clovis Island) will be no pushover with the winner of that Loughbrickland point running a fair race against the Champion Bumper 2nd at Leopardstown over 2mile4f bumper in December a race that included Irish Panther & Elliott’s Will Do. Richards is 6wins - 17 runners @35%
Hopefully the Gamble is landed and we see a future star winning by a wide margin come 5pm tomorrow .. opened - 15/8 - 5/4

Iberico Lord
Iberico Lord - 2nd in 1.05 Sandown 29/04/23
Iberico Lord was given a head scratching ride by Aidan Coleman and if you had him backed you would have been fuming. He followed the winner and stablemate Under Control throughout the race and Aidan Coleman let Under Control get first run on him before making some effort to catch her. I thought it didn't look good for the integrity of racing but JP McManus owned the first two home and that will be the end of that. Iberico Lord is definitely capable of winning a Handicap Hurdle off this mark of 120 whenever connections decide.
Intent Approach
Intent Approach - 2nd in 6.05 Punchestown 29/04/23
It's not too often a Charles Byrnes horse finishes in the frame at odds of 18/1.The thinking would be that Intent Approach ran well above expectations and stayed on gamely to finish second. He was ridden a long way out and Full Metal Jacket and Goldinthemountains travelled all over him up to the furlong pole before Intent Approach outstayed them. He could find a suitable Bumper before going Hurdling. One to keep an eye on especially if there is strong market support.

Nelda
Nelda - 2nd in 2.05 Listowel 04/06/23
Nelda was green on her debut but showed a good attitude to stay on for second doing all her best work at the finish. She was slow out of the stalls and Shane Foley had to kick her on to find an early position behind the leaders. She was niggled along 3 furlongs out but responded impressively and was finishing best of them all. Her siblings have won up to a mile and she will appreciate a step up in trip in time. She should be good enough to win a maiden and should go close next time out.
Sunset Nova
Sunset Nova - 2nd in 4.07 Listowel 04/06/23
Sunset Nova is handicapped to win a race of this nature soon. He came from a long way back and gave away substantial ground racing wide around the last bend to finish second 2 ¼ lengths behind Dutch Glory who got first run. The handicapper has been very lenient dropping him 2lbs to a mark of 56. He won last August at Leopardstown off a mark of 69. Amy Jo Hayes was onboard claiming 7lbs. Take that into consideration he is still 6lbs lower than that revised mark Won @8/1 @down Royal

Lettuce Leaf – 4th in 2.05 Nottingham 26/09/23
Lettuce Leaf went off an unfancied 80/1 for the five furlong maiden at Nottingham on Monday. Franny Norton was onboard and after a slow inexperienced start she ran well above her odds. She was beaten just over three lengths into fourth and she made up a lot of ground before showing greenness under pressure throughout the last furlong. She wasn’t given a hard time and should be capable of picking up a maiden in time.
Theonewedreamof – 4th in 2.50 Downpatrick 15/09/23
The onewedreamof caught the eye staying on after been hampered two hurdles out. It looked like jockey Keith Donoghue had given up on her chances after that but she picked up again and stayed on strongly to the line finishing fourth beaten 4 ¾ lengths. She definitely lost that amount of ground trying to avoid the faller Invictus World at the second last and she should pick up a race of a similar nature.
Gesture – 3rd in 4.50 Naas 14/09/23
Gesture took a significant step forward from his debut effort to suggest he is capable of winning a race of this nature in the near future. He was still showing signs of greenness when turning the bend but stayed on nicely to finish a 1 length third behind the 4/9 favourite. He should have learnt plenty for pressure and should take another step forward for that run. H.D.

Staysound Susie
Staysound Susie - 3rd in 2.50 Naas 14/10/23
Staysound Susie finished third at Naas in a Premier Nursery Handicap over six furlongs on soft to heavy ground. She went off at 20/1 for Andrew Slattery and outran her odds to finish 2 ¼ lengths behind the winner. She was continuously denied a clear run from the two furlong pole right up to half a furlong out. Jockey Andrew Slattery gave her one back hander and she finished strongly to get up for third. With a clear run she would have won in my opinion and should go close with better luck over the next few runs.
Volatile Analyst
Volatile Analyst - 4th in 4.00 Naas 14/10/23
Volatile Analyst changed trainers in August joining Adrain McGuinness from Keith Dalgleish. This was his fourth run for his new trainer and he showed more promise than he had in his previous three outings. He was rated 93 on his first run for his new trainer and now has a mark of 80. He was caught out in the middle of the track here and started to paddle about half furlong out, eventually finishing fourth. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was to take a step forward for that run and pop up in Dundalk where he has a mark of 85.
Ebanza
Ebanza - 2nd in 1.05 Naas 15/10/23
Ebanza was sent off 5/2 second favourite for this Fillies Maiden over six furlongs on soft ground. She gave jockey Ben Coen a torrid time over the first couple of furlongs throwing around her head and refusing to settle. Ben had no choice but to pull her out wide and let her go forward where she travelled like a horse with plenty of promise. She knuckled down to fight out the finish, eventually finishing a head second. Without doubt if she hadn't used up so much energy early doors she would have won. She might not be the biggest price next time out but she should take the world of beating. H.D.

Gin Coco - 5th in 3.20 Ffos Las 15/10/23
Gin Coco had a lovely pipe opener in this to set himself up for a crack at the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday. He was second in that race last year off a mark of 131 and is only 2 lbs higher this year. He has only had the two races in between and is still unexposed. Last year's ill-fated winner I like to move It had climbed 12 lbs in the handicap and Gin Coco was 13 lengths clear of the third. He should run well this weekend.
